Niggy Tardust - An Experiment

Saul WilliamsMore and more musicians are turning their back on the music distributors and pushing out on their own.

The latest to do so is Saul Williams, a poet and dub hip-hop artist from New York, who’s releasing his newest album, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust! as either a free download or for $5 for a higher quality version. The impetus to release this album as such came from Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame, for whom Williams has opened for a number of tours:

From the start, I remember Trent saying, “Let’s give it away for free.” At first, I was like, “This dude is out of his mind!” But then it really started making sense, and, of course, with Radiohead doing it, we were like, “What the fuck? The idea that we had was great, and we should really follow it through.

I’ve picked up this album for $5 and honestly have yet to listen to it. The $5 was to support the idea and reward the risk, and really that’s less than a good pint of beer. For new music, that’s practically no cost at all.

The reason that I haven’t yet listened to this album is not what you’re thinking though. While waiting for it to download I google’d Williams (whom I’d never heard of before) and came across an older song of his called “List of Demands”. This song kicks some ass. “List of Demands” is so good I’m still getting a grip on it, before listening to his new album (there’s an excellent chance that you’ll hate it; c’est la vie).

I recommend starting with the video:

Then grab the mp3 (its available for free): betterPropaganda: Saul Williams.

And if it works for you, drop $5 to support an independent artist and help push forward a new musical movement.

It is an amazing album … and the second one I’ve bought in a loooong time (Thanks Radiohead)

I also suggest Nine Inch Nails - Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D

Good suggestion, I’ll check that one out as well, I hadn’t heard of it before.
