Dateline Doesn’t Get DefCon

Michelle Madigan It seems that Dateline NBC decided to try and infiltrate the über-secret hacker cabal that is DefCon by sending in an under-cover journalist. It appears the plan was to get the dangerous hackers to admit to wrong-doing and nefariousness on hidden camera and then out them on TV as the threat they truly are.

A cute idea, really. The feds show up every year so it was only time until the media tried it too. However unlike the feds who know they’re going to get busted (the game’s called “Spot the Fed” for a reason, which I almost one the second year I attended except the military comm guy I was talking to begged me not to tell as his superiors didn’t know he was there) it seems Dateline really, really didn’t do any research into the DefCon demographic.

They sent in Michelle Madigan, above, who looks about as much a typical DefCon attendee (chicks included) as fuzzy little bunnies look like tyrannosaurus rex.

It was great fun looking for her in the crowds at Defcon this year. I was also in the right place at the right time and was in the crowed leading her to her car.

To bad my pics didn’t turn out so good.
