iPhone Sales: Nice Try Apple

iphone Sales: Nice Try AppleAccording to Scott Moritz over at TheStreet.com Apple missed its sales targets for the iPhone and thus “rivals are rejoicing”.

I’m no industry pundit with inside sources and research staff and all so I’m going to wing it and just use Bloomberg’s numbers:

Phones sold: 700 000
Prices for phones: $500 or $600

Being a bit lazy I’m just going to call it at an average price of $550.

     700 000
       * 550
____________
$385 000 000

And that’s before anyone has turned them on, without factoring in recurring revenue like the phone plan, text messaging, and the like.

I think that if you’re in a market and a brand-new competitor comes along and sells a third of a billion dollars in product in four days right out from under you, and you’re rejoicing, you might need to lay off the sauce a bit. Or stop using WorldCom’s old accountants.

    And the phones only cost about $200 in parts. Say development cost 10M, that’s still a hefty profit!

    Merrill, I haven’t got a clue what your comment means. Maybe it’s free-form comment spam. Regardless, I’m glad you got something out of it. Now put the gun down.
