In the United States writing down or distributing, in any way, the following set of letters and numbers is illegal.

C0 88 56 63 C5 56 41 D8 5B E3 74 9D 02 11 F9 09

Wait, sorry, I typed that backwards. It should start with 09 and end with C0. Mea culpa, that’s a totally different number up there. Had I not made that mistake you’d be looking at the processing key for the new HD-DVD DRM.

Articles about this number have been pulled from Digg, the original site that published has been shut down, the post referrenced in this Reddit post is gone, all victims of the DMCA. Even Google received a take-down notice.

Yes, it is no longer inconceivable that one can go to jail for possessing a number.

Update: Digg decided to reverse its decision to censor the original post and run this story anyhow:
