Kaspersky iPod Virus FUD

FUD: Fear, uncertainty, doubt.
Kaspersky Labs is reporting that they’ve “discovered” the first iPod virus. They then qualify their “discovery” with an absurd amount of conditionals, including:
- Only works on iPods reformatted and running Linux
- The user has to install the “virus” themselves
- The user has to manually launch the “virus”
- The “virus” cannot spread, cannot make it off the “infected” iPod at all
Where I come from we call software that requires all that an “application”. That it then alters files on your system does not make it viral by any means, just malicious. This is a patently absurd claim.
How To Protect The World’s iPods
Do nothing, unless you’ve installed Linux on your iPod for some reason in which case fight the temptation to download, install, and execute that file. Ta da.
