Remember My DVD Player? Dead!

Though I enjoyed Blood Diamond last nightsa-pm08 it appears my DVD player did not. I woke up this morning to find it dead (”No no, he’s not dead, he’s… he’s restin’!”), no power going anywhere into it past the transformer. So dead I had to take it apart to get the DVD out (”Well, he’s…he’s, ah…probably pining for the fjords.”).

I’ve had that Panasonic SA-PM08 for about six years now and it has served me faithfully for every moment of them. Goodbye DVD player.

Any suggestions on a decent < $500 (or so) DVD player to replace it?

Evan is swearing by this one http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21033&vpn=DVP5960/37&manufacture=PHILIPS

Besides playing Divx and WMV burned onto disc, it has a USB port that you can plug any external drive into and play video right off it! I’m thinking of getting one, a wifi network drive, and saying “screw you” to iTV

    RIP old boy.
My player is unhappy these days, but when it throws a fit and refuses to play certain movies, we watch it in the PS2 or the laptop, just to show it who’s boss.

If I was going to get a game machine, it’d be a Wii but that time is still a ways off (not much into video games, I’m afraid). That machine that Evan has is very interesting indeed, esp. the USB part.

I wonder… would it be possible to dual-connect an external USB drive to both that DVD player and into an Airport Extreme and have it recognized by both? That would be the ultimate solution!
