Facebook Dragging Me In…

Chris Cummer's Facebook profile Ever since the rise of Friendster back in 2003 (is that thing still around? hey, it is! And so is my account… sitting there like digital flotsam) I’ve pretty much avoided the social networking sites, not for any real reason but that I don’t seem to get much out of them. And they seem to be able to suck up an incredible amount of time if you let them.

Until recently, when I started getting a bunch of LinkedIn and Facebook invitations and such. So I joined again, as you can see from the Facebook image up there on the left.

I still don’t really seem to get what they’re actually good for but it certainly is entertaining connecting all these links and poking people. Is there a tangible, practical value to being a member of a social networking site, other than just simply being part of (yet another) crowd?

… sigh. You’re so right. But Facebook has been pretty fun so far and it’s very well thought out. Re: social newtorking in general, I wrote this to a friend earlier this week: “we’re like a giant swarm of needy kids running from one ‘love me’ place to another”.

I’m not strong enough to rise above Chris. Love me.
