Number portability comes to Canada

This is good news for all cellphone users in Canada:

…major wireless telecommunications carriers across the country will flip the switch on wireless number portability (WNP), which will allow cellphone users to do something that has been possible with traditional land lines for years.

It obviously won’t be a perfect system, cellphones themselves often won’t work on different networks, and if you’re in a contract that’ll limit your abilities until it expires but it will provide options and a little bit more pressure on the cellphone companies to improve services.

Have you seen the massive AdSense ad campaign that Telus launched in conjunction today? Every Adsense ad for Canadians is almost certainly Telus for today!

Yep, they seem to think they’re either going to grab share from most likely Fido (I doubt they’ll be able to grab much from Rogers). Ironically, if I weren’t locked into a contract, I’d move from Telus to Rogers. Someday perhaps….
