The Smears

Part of moving to a new city is finding reasons to like it. I’ve been making a real effort to experience as many interesting things in Vancouver as possible. I gotta admit, this city has made it easy pretty easy so far, what with great fireworks the week after we arrived, hikes up to glaciers an hour’s drive away, Squamish, Whistler, and night snowboarding at Cyprus mountain after work during the week (it is the life).
But I confess I’ve been well negligent in exploring the Vancouver music scene.
Fortunately for me I have a good friend who refuses to give up on me, no matter how many “must see” shows I miss, and who keeps plying me with new music (thanks to him I got to see I, Braineater the other night, sixteen years after hearing my first Braineater song. Good times were had!)
One of the local bands that I’m loving the sound of enough to pimp them here is The Smears, fronted by Rene who has the sexiest, dusky punk-rock voice since Joan Jett (sorry Joan… but then you never return my calls anyway).
I post this now because last week Adam slipped me an advanced copy of The Smears first album, ‘Asthenic Process’, which will be released on March 9 (check their site for release party details). I highly recommend, it’s pretty damned good for a first album.
To get a taste, check out their first video on YouTube: So Scared. Fairly certain that song will be the first single and my money’s on Distant Memory as the second (or long-shot odds on Jaded).
Indulge me my shameless shilling of this band one more second, for I do so only because they’re local, they’re Canadian and they’re better than most of that crap we’re forced to sit through each day (I post this for you, my poor ex-co-workers who know who you are). I’ve been told that apparently their album will be available both through the iTunes Music Store and CDBaby for your purchasing pleasure. (Much as I like iTunes, may I suggest supporting CDBaby should you purchase? That place is great).
(And you haven’t gone to see Mudmen yet, have you? Really, I can only do so much ;))
