The iTunes world is all a-twitter over NPR’s story by some guy named Dave about how he found a “musical soulmate” via a random chance encouter of iTunes music sharing:
And the weird thing is, when he went to listen to the music, it was just like his. Everything he had, she had: Beck, the White Stripes, Beth Orton… It was as if he’d found his musical soulmate.
I’m sure it’s a wonderful, heart-warming story about the absolute improbability of two complete strangers finding common ground in the big, cold, cruel city…. except for Dave’s song list:
Odds are David Kestenbaum’s playlist won’t pop up on your PC.
Song #1: Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead from OK Computer.
Song #2: Girl by Beck from Guero.
Song #3: Sweetest Decline by Beth Orton from Central Reservation.
Song #4: My Doorbell from the White Stripes’ Get Behind Me Satan.
Song #5: Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah from their eponymous 2005 album.
Song #6: Mad World a cover of the Tears for Fears song by Gary Jules from Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets.
Song #7: The Shining by Badly Drawn Boy from The Hour of Bewilderbeast.
“Musical soulmate”? This song list reads like that of every Web-2.0 Creative Directing, angst-ridden, semi-balding, flash-mobbing, Richard Linklater-wanna be hipster I’ve ever known. That music is the front page of the iTunes store. It’s the musical equivalent of buying a Mini and being thunderstruck when you pull in beside another one in the parking lot of Ikea.
