RAID1 On Ubuntu 6.04 (Dapper)

Early last week my Ubuntu machine up-and-died when GRUB could no longer find any OS on any of the drives. While mucking about fixing GRUB issues might be someone’s idea of a good time, I decided instead to blast the install to figurative smithereens (esp. the Windows disk that never got used) and re-install Ubuntu 6.04 with RAID1.
It’s dead easy to do, just follow Martti Kuparinen’s ‘RAID1 In My Ubuntu Installation primer.
There is one caveat I ran into though: despite the first two disks I tried being exactly the same size, brand and model (250 Gig Seagate Barracuda’s) they were different production rev’s. Three times trying the partitioning of the drives and they failed each time. When I swapped in another drive, making sure that both drives were now exactly the same production rev, everything worked flawlessly.
This should really not be an issue so I’m skeptical that it was that when it could very well be that there’s a flaw with the drive I swapped out. However if you try this and see the partitioning go flaky, check that as a culprit.
Given the price of drives these days (I picked up two 250 Gig drives for $89 apiece) there’s no reason not to go big, go RAID, and enjoy the redundancy. I’ll never be without my Firefly episodes again.
