Creative Works Will
Neil Gaiman was prompted by the death of a friend to enlist the help of a lawyer in drafting a template for a will that covers what happens to an author’s creative works after their death. In other words, who gets their words. His template is geared towards authors but such a thing strikes me […]
First Thoughts on Ubuntu 6.10
Ten minutes to install on a brand new, out of the wrapper, 250 Gig Barracuda drive. Five seconds to select Synaptic from the System menu. Three minutes of frozen system before having to do a hard reboot of the computer.
First thoughts: avoid Ubuntu 6.10 at all costs. Stick with 6.06 until the issues have been […]
Fog Horns in Vancouver?
Woke up at 5:30 this morning to what sounds like a fog horn but that’s crazy because I’ve never heard it before, it doesn’t look foggy to me (meteorologist that I am), and I’m at N 49 15.5, W 123 07.5* and given that I’m nowhere hear fog-laden waters, that would have to be the […]
Times Around the World
The greatness of the web: I needed to know what time it was in Perth, Australia today and lo, a website for that very sort of thing: The World Clock. Shows the current time all around the world.
Thursday Morning Funnies: Home Security
Every day should start with a good laugh. Having just watched Ken Olbermann on The Military Commissions Act, this day more than most. To that end, Mike Jagger describes how not to wire a home security system in Why millions of home alarm systems are useless….
(Note: in both Jagger’s and Schneier’s posts there’s a number […]
SpamAssassin on OS X
Apple has a pretty good article about installing SpamAssassin under OS X. Unfortunatelly it has a bug. This section:
spamassassin -tD > spam-sample
should read:
spamassassin -tD < spam-sample
If you enter email the way the Apple Developer article states, you’ll wipe out your email since it is writing to spam-sample and not reading from.

BBEdit 8.5.1 - one of the few times a point release has fixed an issue that’s had a direct, long-lasting and adverse impact on me.
The problem was: when creating PHP classes I tend to include a default constructor in them whether that constructor then contains any code or not, ala:
public function __construct()
{}
I do this so […]
The Best Thing About Thanksgiving…
Besides all the other good things: stuffing and pumpkin pie for breakfast the next morning.
I Hope Nova Scotian Bridges are Built Better
From that same Globe and Mail article on Nova Scotia legalizing Sunday shopping:
Also, arguing that Nova Scotia is no less culturally unique than Quebec, [Mr. Lohnes] said the government should use the notwithstanding clause to get around the ruling.
…
“We don’t feel that we should do what everybody else does. If 20 people jumped off the […]
Who Needs Courts Anyway?
From today’s Globe and Mail article on Nova Scotia legalizing Sunday shopping:
“I really felt that the government passed this over to the courts because they knew the courts were going to end it,” said Tony Lohnes, spokesman for Save Our Sundays.
“Why should the courts decide everything, I mean, why are the courts the law of […]
