A Look Back at Speech Recognition

Jay’s post (What Belongs in an OS?) about Vista’s (lack of) speech recognition support had me reminiscing about the good ol’ days of Apple speech recognition. Turns out it’s still in OS X under Speech in the System Preferences but it doesn’t seem to work any better than it ever did.
Upside: you don’t have to train it to your voice.
Downside: a typical session usually goes something like this:
“Com-pu-ter… open Mail.”
…
“Com-pu-ter… open… Mail.”
…
“Com-pu-ter… OP-EN… MAIL.”
…
“Aw screw this, where’s my mouse?” *click*
