Last Wednesday my laptop hard drive died. The kind of death heralded by the sound of grinding bearings, reminiscent of someone trying to shift a car from fifth to reverse at top speed. Fortunately for me it gave me about a half an hour of warning, just enough time to plug in the Firewire drive and get everything backed up. A true definition of fear and relief if ever there was one.
If you own a Titanium Powerbook and you’ve ever had cause to go inside you’ll know that it’s not the easiest thing in the world. From beginning to end the entire process took me about eight hours, largely in part to the machine’s insistance on booting right into Open Firmware after I’d installed the replacement drive, complaining about bad memory sectors in the on-board RAM (*that* was a disturbing thought). Eight hours, two Dos Equis and one Lagavulin, neat.
