Canada Going for Gold

I like the Olympics and I particularly like women’s hockey. The women have two things going for them that the men don’t that makes their game much more fun to watch, IMO:
- They play great hockey in every regard: passing, positioning, scoring, stick handling, goal tending, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
- They’re not in the NHL. Men’s Olympic hockey is definitely a cut above NHL hockey, by virtue of the differences in rules and rink size but still, it’s just the NHL mixed around a bit. I find that boring.
Today the Canadian Women’s team beat Finland and now face Sweden for the gold (the best the US can hope for now is Bronze, against Finland). “Beat” might be the wrong word: like every team before them the Canadians kicked their ass. They worked for it, but it was still a butt-kicking.
Given their record so far, it’s pretty reasonable to expect a gold medal on Monday, however Sweden did knock out the US, which surprised everyone so who knows. To date:
- Canada vs. Finland: 6-0
- Canada vs. Sweden: 8-1
- Canada vs. Russia: 12-0
- Canada vs. Italy: 16-0
To the women’s hockey team: on Monday, good luck!
