MENSA Intelligence Test

MENSAI doubt this is particularly credible but it certainly is a lot of fun if you’re into the whole crossword puzzle/word game thing: MENSA Intelligence Test.

The test says that if you get 19 or more correct you can claim to be a genius. If that’s true then I’m a Supra-Jenus++ since I’m giving up my attempt with 31 correct out of 33, getting beaten only by the following two:

Actually I did get #30 but Jay gave me a hint as to the P part of it after which it fell into place. Thus I’m not counting it in my total. Maybe I’ll count half of it. Yeah, half. That makes my score 31.5 / 33: Supra-Jenus++ Ultra baby.

Warning: clicking either of these links will spoil the answer to #28 for you:
Time to Google #28… and I am kicking myself in the ass for not getting that one. Especially since I’ve been reading this book for the past week.

Update: If you take the test and write about it, drop a comment here or something so I can see how you did. I’m very interested to know which ones people missed, especially given the cultural bias of the test and that some can be deduced from the numeric component while others cannot.

    I got 25 before giving up… here’s the ones I missed:

    7) 13 S in the U S F
    12) 3 B M (S H T R) (this one pissed me off!)
    14) 15 P in a R T
    17) 11 P in a F (S) T
    24) 13 L in a B D
    30) 9 P in S A
    31) 6 B to an O in C
    33) 15 M on a D M C

This one looks even harder: http://intelligence-test.net/part2/

7 jumped out at me as soon as i saw it, but I already knew the relationship of 13 to the flag. 33 is one that you either know or don’t, it can’t be inferred from its elements. I didn’t get it until I said it out loud, at which point the cadence of the phrase popped it into my head. If you’ve never read RLS’s TI then it wouldn’t make sense.

The british-centric ones were definitely tougher.

    Nice job!

I should also mention that I got “31) 6 B to an O in C” by accident and would not have without the auto-validation on the web page. After much mucking about I was certain that it was balls/bats/bases for B and cricket for C. I just happened to have ‘balls’ for B when I was guessing at O, and was in the process of typing ‘overtimes’ when it auto-validated correct on ‘over’.

Does that admission hurt my genius status?
