In a bit of a surprise move Microsoft has released Flip4Mac, a set of codecs for .wma and .wmv files for QuickTime. Evidently OS X users will now be able to view these file formats from within QuickTime instead of firing up the very not so impressive Windows Media Player:

Flip4Mac WMV allows you to play, import and export Windows Media® files from most QuickTime applications including QuickTime Player, iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

Flip4Mac WMV also includes an Internet plug-in that plays Windows Media streams within Safari and other web browsers….

By “other web browsers” I presume they mean Firefox.

Good stuff Microsoft, much appreciated this is.
