Thanks to Carman I got to check out an advanced screening of Land of the Dead tonight. If you like zombie movies you’ll be amused by this one, but it ain’t no Dawn of the Dead by any stretch of the imagination.

Thinking zombies just doesn’t work very well and having George Romero direct it was a mistake. I know he effectively invented the genre but the genre hasn’t been doing so well. It would have been wiser to let Zack Snyder take another crack at this one as well and see what could come of it. The world just doesn’t need another darkly-lit zombie movie full of slow-moving zombies, no matter how well they handle a gun. Brightly-lit fast, primal zombies… now that shit is scary.

My suggestion: if you want to watch zombies then save your bucks. Go out and rent Return of the Living Dead and the Dawn of the Dead remake, stay home and enjoy. This one ain’t worth it.

And in the event that you’re considering seeing this and you haven’t yet seen Shawn of the Dead, what’s wrong with you? You’re only hurting yourself. Get thee to a video store and rent SofD instead.

Update: Retro Crush has this review of the same movie and I can only conclude now that Retro Crush is written by prison inmates confined to solitary 23 hours a day. Its the only existence in which this film could be considered a shining star in the mediocrity of one’s life.
