Book meme

For Pony and lilydustbin:

Number of books I own
600+ I haven’t counted them in quite a while and I dumped a bunch of paperbacks the last time I moved but at the moment they cover the entire east wall of my living room. Except for where the TV is. And the liquor. And the shrunken head.

Reading style
When reading fiction I tend to start on the first page and not stop until I’ve finished the book, three, four, six, eight hours later. Non-fiction that requires some sort of digestion usually goes in fits and bursts: read some, think, have more questions, read some more. And generally I read late at night. Insomnia does have it’s uses.

Last book I bought
“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night” by Mark Haddon. Bought it for my mom for her birthday but of course she’d already read it so I kept it. And read it.
Mom: I still owe you a book.

Last book I read
“King of Torts” by John Grisham. I was at a cottage, it was laying around, I didn’t enjoy it very much. He’s written better. Am I forgiven?

Book I am reading now
“Nature via Nurture: Genes, experience, and what makes us human” by Matt Ridley. Lent to me by my sister in what I think might have been some sort of reverse psychology attempt to make me feel bad for swiping her copy of “The Red Queen”.

5 Books that blew me away
“Foucault’s Pendulum” by Umberto Eco. Perhaps my favourite book of all time. After four readings and accumulating numerous ancillary references mentioned within it I’m starting to think I understand it.

“Watchmen” by Alan Moore. The finest example of why graphic novels can be so much more than mere comic books. Narrowly edges out “The Dark Knight Returns” by Frank Miller as my favourite graphic novel (which narrowly beats out Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s Wolverine mini-series-wrapped–up-in-a-set).

“Lamb” by Christopher Moore. Quite possibly the funniest, most sacrilicious book I’ve ever read.

“Battle Royale” by Koushun Takami. High school kids slaughter each other on an island. This is a brutally vicious, extremely well-written bit of psychological horror. Or crap if you don’t like that sort of thing. Best accidental impulse buy I’ve had in a long time.

“Genome” by Matt Ridley. I don’t remember who it was that turned me onto Genome, and thus Ridley’s writing, but thanks! You’ve ensured I have just enough superficial biological sciences knowledge to be arrogant and annoying.
