Creemore no more?

Ok, maybe that’s a bit hyperbolic but Molson just bought one of the finest small Ontario breweries and I can’t help but feel that it ultimately might not be good for the taste that is Creemore: Molson buys Creemore Springs Brewery:

The company said it will look at expanding Creemore sales to other parts of Canada, as well as increasing the Ontario-based craft brewer’s marketing spending.

Molson said the acquisition would give it a position in the growing domestic super-premium segment, adding that the Creemore brand image and brewing craft will remain unchanged.

“Molson’s intention is for Creemore to continue operating as a distinct organization benefiting from its own people, knowledge, recipes and marketing methods,” said Kevin Boyce, the president and CEO of Molson Canada.

I still fondly remember the place I had my first pint of Creemore, at the Absinthe Pub at York U in 1991. Here’s hoping….

I am a resident and former employee of Creemore Springs. I started off being a farmhand and fixer upper for the mastermind behind the rich amber lager, John Wiggins. This, as I remember, was John’s retirement project and a proud one at that. He later then sold off his interest to members of management which then proceeded to “sell out”.
I know John would never have “sold out” to “the BIG GUY”, he was proud to be “the LITTLE GUY”

    Quality not Quantity…

Thus far I have to say that the taste and quality haven’t seem to have changed, at least not appreciably to my tastes, which is making me extremely happy.

Having grown up in Waterloo I’m pretty used to breweries, with Seagrams (ok, it was a distillery), Labatts (no more) and Brick (still going strong) all within walking distance of my house. This summer I got the chance to stop by the Creemore brewery on the way back from a camping trip and I gotta say: it was the friendliest brewery I’ve ever been to and every single person was adamant that they’d preserve the Creemore.

So thanks to you Mr Prentice, for doing your part as well. It has been much appreciated over the years.
