Union filesystems in OS X

I have no idea what this is good for but it’s pretty cool nonetheless. Jonathan Rentzsch describes Union filesystems (a term I’d never heard before) in OS X and a simple way of using one: Union Filesystems.
The FeeBSD.org doc on it which states:
The “union” filesystem type allows the contents of several
directories to be merged and made visible in a single directory.
