What does your iPod sound like?

No, not the music on your iPod but rather the software that runs the iPod, resident in the flash ROM.
Nils Schneider wanted to know how to get his own software to inter-op with his iPod hardware. In order to do this he needed to know how the firmware worked. In order to know how the firmware worked he needed to be able to get to the hardware…. Chicken and egg, or so it seemed, until he discovered that he could output the firmware as a series of beeps, record those, and reconstitute them as the 64 Kb of code from the flash ROM.
His is a tale of hacking at its purest: The Sound of iPod.
(Whether you understand what he’s talking about or not at least jump to the bottom and give a listen to sound file #2. It’s the voice of your iPod).
