It’s so cold that… wtf?

Ontario is experiencing an impressive cold snap right now with temperatures down in the -30C’s (that’s -947 for you Fahrenheit people), with some amusing consequences:

A cold spell gripping Ottawa is so intense that houses have started to produce loud cracking noises, prompting worried citizens to report burglaries and gunfire, local police said Wednesday.

But then the story states:

“Those calls were all (prompted by) the cold,” she said, adding that one possible reason for the loud noises were exploding nails.

WTF??? Why isn’t that the headline, nay, the lead story for the day? Hell, a few Pintos explode from rear-end collisions and the world is up in arms about it but nails… a mere aside in a human interest story.

Now correct me if I’m wrong but it seems to me that cold weather is a far more common occurrance than getting automotively reamed while driving a low-rent hatch-back.

And frostbite I can deal with but the threat of the ubiquitous fastener spontaneously flinging shrapnel about?

(Incidentally, why hasn’t the screw consortium jumped on this and hammered it home to the public? This could be the edge they’ve been looking for, the last nail as it were).
