So the Liberals won a minority government, the Conservatives did considerably better than the last time around and the Bloc continues to be the voice of the French. Good times were had be all (except perhaps Stephen Harper, but good show on the game face at the end there Mr. Harper).
In my opinion the best party to govern Canada for the next four years, given the political climate not of Canada but of the rest world, won in this election. The most experienced leader is still in power at a time when global volatility seems to grow greater and greater and the checks and balances of experienced conviction are needed.
Perhaps within our borders the Liberals aren’t the best party for Canada but to defend and exert our presence on the world stage I think we’ve done the right thing.
More interesting to me though: Belinda Stronach winning her riding and getting herself into a position to get the experience and education she needs to play in the majors. It’ll also afford her a considerably better platform from which to let the rest of us know her leanings. The campaign trail and all its sound-bity goodness is not conducive to that sort of thing for neophyte hopefuls.
The Conservative side of things promises to be fascinating the next time around for sure.
And congrats to the Greens for getting an impressive amount of the vote at 4.3% and rising into position to receive Federal funding the next time around. This too will make the next election much more interesting as the Greens are able to fund a full-time elections staff and afford a real advertising campaign (you wondered why the Green presence seemed so lacking? They’re funding it all themselves whereas the other major parties receive taxpayer dollars to finance their campains: $1.75 for every vote they receive should they receive more than 2% of the popular vote).
Maybe next time they’ll even let the Greens sit in on the debates….
