Don’t tolerate shit

It’s OS day here on ob.blog. John “Daring Fireball” Gruber has written a great piece on the real-world security of Macs vs. PCs. Note the “real world” bit, because it’s important. “Real world” security is how safe and secure your computer actually is, regardless of the circumstances. Theoretical security focuses on probabilities and likelihoods and “yeah but what if…”’s and such.

I’m going to ruin his piece for you by starting with his ending:

Mac users don’t tolerate shit.

and leave it up to you to read Broken Windows to find out just what he’s talking about.

Instead, I’m going to riff on that one quoted statement for a moment. To all Mac users reading this I say: do not tolerate shit, from anyone who has any effect on your Mac-using experience. Not from the largest software vendor nor from the smallest freeware developer. If someone develops something that harms your machine, pillory them. Be loud about it, make yourself heard via Google. Let everyone know.

Conversely if you love something don’t be quiet about it, let the developer know. Let everyone know. Hold it up for all to see any maybe, hopefully, other developers will strive to that as well.

Let us not allow the quality of user experience on our Macs be defined by silence and head-hanging acceptance, for we are not Windows users. We are proud Mac users and our Mac developers are some of the most shit-hot software developers on any platform anywhere. It is up to us to ensure their powers remain used for good, and not evil.

I say this as a long-time, die-hard Mac developer.
