Cable guy knows everything

I decided to get cable tv again, which in theory should be a pretty straight-forward process with few hassles. It’s not like cable is something you can fraudulently purchase and then skip town with, you pretty much have to sit around with it where you got it. If you steal it it’s not too tough for the authorities to figure out where you are.
Imagine my surpise to discover that in order to get cable Rogers requires:
1. my Social Insurance number
2. my Driver’s License number
3. my date of birth
4. my credit card number
Net result: some guy at a call centre in India now has all the information they need to effectively become me. I don’t remember the process being that invasive the last time I had cable installed some five years ago.
Funny thing is: when I asked him about this he said it was for my own protection. I stopped trying at that point - I just want my MTV…. in four to five working days.
Dear Rogers: if you start charging me for it right now can I just walk out to the box and reconnect it myself?
