iTunes Music Store RSS

In a brilliant example of how RSS can really be used (far beyond just synidcated blog content), Apple’s iTunes Music Store lets you create custom feeds based on a myriad number of options: iTunes Music Store RSS Generator.
An example: drag this link into your RSS aggregator to track new releases in the Alternative genre. An item from this feed looks like:
![]() |
…In Dub Meat Beat Manifesto Release Date: 2003 |
(If you click any of the links in that item it’ll pop up the info in iTunes. Very nice.)
I love this use of the technology. I’d like to see RSS applied more liberally to dynamic, non-blog content. As a general rule of RSS: if it’s content and it changes, it can probably be syndicated. I’d like to see Amazon let me create a custom feed that tracks authors I define. I’d like to see eBay let me create a feed that find auctions I might be interested in. I’d like to see job sites like Monster and Workopolis let me see my persisten job searches as feeds. In a nutshell: if I currently have to go to it through my browser, I probably want it to come to me through my aggregator.
Now if only I could buy from the iTunes store in Canada.
