The 10.3 Finder is awesome

After ranting about a few of the short-comings of the current Finder I thought I’d mention a few things that make me happy.

1. Exposé. This feature is incredible: the implementation, the speed, the ease of use. It took less than five minutes for this to become an indispensible tool. Whomever designed Exposé: you rock.

2. The left-handed toolbar. It took me a while to get used to this but now that it’s there, it just seems natural. I’m still not sure why Finder windows are brushed metal since that seems to contravene Apple’s own HIG but from a functional perspective: I like the toolbar at the left much better.

3. Labels. Label implementation is fraught with numerous UI problems: the menu used to select a label is truly terrible. Unselected labels look great, selected labels are totally ineffective. But that labels are back at all is fantastic. I have no doubt Apple will iron out the implementation details over time; I’m glad they listened to the clamourings of the users and brought this feature back.
