Protesting the School of the Americas
I just got word that a friend of mine spent much of the last while down in Georgia protesting the School of the Americas as part of his vacation:
Over ten thousand people gathered this weekend outside the gates of Ft. Benning, Georgia in the most diverse demonstration yet of opposition to the School of the [...]
Burnin’ down the house, turkey style
South of the border it’s Thanksgiving time. In the spirit:
Allstate Insurance said 15 homes burned to the ground around the country last Thanksgiving as a result of the improper use of turkey fryers. The product-testing company Underwriters Laboratory Inc. (search) refuses to certify as safe any turkey fryer model currently on the market.
…
Guthrie said those concerns begin [...]
Hate crimes hurt everyone
From the “get what you deserve” files:
A bullet fired in the air during a Ku Klux Klan initiation ceremony came down and struck a participant in the head, critically injuring him, authorities said.
…
About 10 people, including two children, had gathered for the ceremony. The man who was being initiated was blindfolded, tied with a noose [...]
Martian landscapes
My free time has lately been occupied by reading “Phantoms in the Brain” by VS Ramachandran - an absolutely fascinating book exploring dissociations between the brain and body. Writing with wit and humour, similar in style to that of Oliver Sacks without the overwhelming sense of self-importance (I find Sacks’ work extrememly interesting but am [...]
PEAR revisited
Thanks to Steve and Patrick the problem was determined: multiple copies of the pear binary, and the wrong one launching by default. Things are working nicely now. Thanks gents!
PEAR on OS X: Problems
If you’ve got experience getting PEAR running under OS X, maybe you can help?
The Situation:

However the PHP cli shows: PHP 4.3.2 (cli) (built: [...]
Happy Birthday Mike!
He’s starting down that slippery slope to 30 so be nice to him today - and repeat things often lest he forget easily. Happy birthday Mike!
Telus’ latest campaign
Recently Telus introduced a line of camera phones - great, ’bout time. What’s weird to me is that they’re using Nena’s “99 Luftballons” to sell them - a song about the accidental end of the world through bugs in technology.
(Dear Telus: bluetooth anyone?)
Happy Birthday Bob!
I’d comment on the onset of grey hair, but he is a greyhound after all. I think it suits him nicely. Happy birthday Bob!
The 10.3 Finder is awesome
After ranting about a few of the short-comings of the current Finder I thought I’d mention a few things that make me happy.
1. Exposé. This feature is incredible: the implementation, the speed, the ease of use. It took less than five minutes for this to become an indispensible tool. Whomever designed Exposé: you rock.
2. The [...]
