Tired of being treated like a criminal?

Recently the RIAA decided it would sue the crap out of anyone that it found heavily engaging in online file sharing. These are the same folks that, back in 2002, wanted to add an appendix to anti-terrorism legislation that would have given them the right to hack into your home computer and destroy your data if they though you were file sharing. The same folks that demand ISPs hand over all the information the ISPs have about you and your online surfing habits if they suspect you of file sharing.
They’re a bit crazy, quite out of control and hell-bent on ensuring that anything that might stand in their way of squeezing every last dime out of every last album and song is destroyed - your rights be damned. Make no mistake: this is not about protecting the artists, this is not about ensuring that the artists are fairly compensated, this is about the record labels maximizing their take. If it were about the artists, as the RIAA so often profers up as shielding, then we wouldn’t be seeing groups like Artists Against the RIAA or Recording Artists’ Coalition rise up.
Fortunately one group has yet again stepped up to the plate to face this challenge: the EFF. And they’re soliciting your help:
We need to face the fact that copyright law currently is broken. It is making criminals out of music lovers and technologists. College students are being sued, ISPs are being forced to rat out their customers, some members of Congress are calling for college students to be jailed for file sharing, the list goes on and on. But there are more than 60 million people in the United States alone who use file sharing–more than the number of people who voted for our current President. If we all band together and stand up for our rights, we can change the law.
…
Join the fight. Become an EFF member today so the music can play on.
The other night at around 2am I was flipping channels and lo and behold Mortal Kombat was on. The paralells are striking (though the acting and dialogue in EFF vs. RIAA is considerably better). All that yet remains is: FATALITY.
Step up and pick a side.
