Good news today: the OpenOffice team has released the OpenOffice 1.0.3 GM for Mac OS X, which is pretty damned cool.
OpenOffice is an open-source replacement for the Microsoft Office suite and from my preliminary, ad hoc, “what crap do I have laying around on my hard drive that I can test this against?” tests it appears to do a pretty good job (though some of the more complicated Word files end up looking a bit unusual). Nonetheless, it looks extremely usable.
Since it’s not a native OS X application I had to install an XWindows manager before being able to use it. Evidently OpenOffice comes bundled with XFree86 but I chose instead to install Apple’s X11 implementation (which is nonetheless based upon XFree86) because that’s what I had running on my other X install. Familiarity breeds contempt, except with underlying architechtures.
If you’re looking for a decent replacement for your MS Office suite (and I’ve got one foot set rather firmly in the “less Microsoft is better” camp) and you consider yourself a Unix-savvy MacXOR geek, check out OpenOffice.
